The Town of Chynov

Chynov is one of the oldest permanent settlements in Bohemia. The place is first mentioned in the Chronicle by Kosma and the notice is connected with the year 981. Chynov was one of three frontier castles protecting the estate of Prince Slavnik. The fortified settlement was situated on a promontory in the place of the present castle. After all  the Slavniks were assassinated, Chynov became the property of the Rozmberks. The Schvanzerbergs were the last owners of Chynov Castle.
The Roman-Catholic church of the Holy Trinity which is situated in the square and was built in the year 995 is one of the most significant religious sights in the area of Tabor.
There lived several sculptors in the town in the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century. Frantisek Bilek (1872 – 1941) is the most famous of them. He was a famous representative of symbolism in Czech fine arts. There is the house of his birthplace and a studio (owned by the Gallery of the City of Prague). He is buried in the local cemetery and there is also one of his sculptures – a mighty sculpture called „ The Prayer over the Tombs“. Moreover, there is a tombstone (“The Last Dinner of the Lord”) which he made for the tomb of biologist Fr. Nekut. Other tombstones were made Frantisek‘s brother Antonin and by sculptor Karel Gabriel.
There is the Chynov Cave near the town of Chynov.
