The Landscape

The district of Tabor is somewhat hilly; there are no giant mountains but only charming little hills covered with forests. The Vlasimska Highlands mark the border in the north. The hilly area north-east of Vozice is called Hole Vrchy (Bare Hills), and the forested slopes further south towards Tabor were named after one of trees there - Dubske Vrchy (Oak Hills). In this area one should also look for the highest hill of the district, Mount Batkov (724 metres). The eastern area between Chynov and Choustnik is also hilly and forested.
The difference is striking if you head south - from Tabor to Veseli nad Luznici and Ceske Budejovice. The countryside becomes almost flat, forests become scarce, and if the weather allows, one can see far and wide. The lowland that occupies the southern part of Tabor District and spreads further south to other districts, is called Trebon Basin. Its originally absolutely flat surface was gradually covered with masses of sediment. Crystalline rock beneath is topped up with sand, soil and clay. And thus a “natural basin (pool)” was created which awaited arrival of a man who would fill it up with water.
In the northern part of the basin, called Borkovicka blata (moors), the underlay was impermeable, water could not flow away, and thus the famous moors and peat bogs were created.
In other parts of the basin, along the River Luznice people decided to take advantage of the flat countryside which was rich in water, and built many lakes of various sizes; the oldest of them date back to the end of the 15th century. The sand that had settled here for thousands of years is now used in industry. Several disused, restored quarries are filled with water and very popular among locals as swimming resorts. If you feel like swimming, choose the one in the village of Vlkov because besides a good swim you can see a rarity. There is the biggest sand dune in the Czech Republic. It has a parabolic shape and it covers an area of 0,8369 hectares.
